dog days...

So school is about to start, however I finished my syllabi today. Yay! I started a new painting. Here is a sneak peak. It is 7 x 5. All I am going to say- it is classy!

Recovery

This small little painting (16" x 20") is based off a photo I took in NYC. Those toys in Central Park.... I find them sweet, cheap, and obnoxious. Of all the things you could buy in NYC- you have the best toys in the world. This is more at home in the Dollar General than next to the Upper West Side. However, I am going to raffle this painting off at the show (see below) for the Ole Miss Student Art Association. Brooke is going to do the same with one piece she created on the Tanzania trip. Hopefully, we will make lots of cash for the poor art department.


HB and I are headed to the beach for a quick trip. I am dropping off Flamin' Paintin' at the Space 301 in Mobile. It will be up for the Art in Academia Show for the SECAC conference.

HB and I are also starting an experimental blog. I have no idea how much we will post, but I think it will be a fun and yummy project.

Times Square

After our Welcome Dinner at Lantern Thai, I took several students down to Times Square. For 2 of them, it was their first subway ride.

Brooklyn Baby Part 2

I headed up to the Brooklyn Museum of Art (my first time). It was a couple of stops on the subway and boom- I was there. It is a great encyclopedia museum. I thought the contemporary art on the 4th floor was very strong. The American floor was nice as well. BAM has a very diverse collection. Overall, it was a great place to spend a rainy Sunday. Here are some of the highlights.

Yinka Shonibare is an UK born artist with African roots. This work is about colonization, among other things. I love the over the top patterns and colors.
Art Noveau, Paris gates, c.1900
Mark Bradford, "Jheri Now, Curl Later." Mark is one of my favorite artists. He lives in LA and I heard him talk in grad school. To pay the bills when he was in school, he was a hairdresser in Compton. He uses the foils of the beauty shop and the ubiquitous posters of the inner city to make large abstract works. This is about 12' x 10'.
Do Hoh Suh- He is Korean artist that I found out about on Art 21. I almost always show his work to my Art 101 class. The upper photo of a detail of the lower.

Giant Toy Indian- I am a sucker for art that deals with scale. This a wonderful entrance piece to American Galleries. I can't for the life of me find the artist details for this piece. Maybe I can send the troops to BAM and tell me who this artist is...
For Sweet Pickles- Queen Hatshesput, my favorite Pharoah.

Georgia O'Keefe's Brooklyn Bridge This is for HB- Contemporary furniture. The BAM has Visible Art Storage Rooms. It is very interesting to see behind the scenes.

My explorations of America's first suburb continue... I went down to the Fulton Ferry State Park. It has great views. It was a little gray...

Brooklyn Promenade

After getting off the airplane yesterday, I took a walk around the neighborhood. Two or three blocks from our housing is the Brooklyn Promenade. It has stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan.

Wrapping up the summer

HB and I finally got the stretchers built and the canvas stretched on this enormous 6' x 9' painting. It is too big for my studio so the living room has become my temporary studio. I had some touch up work to do from the shipping. Also I had to finish some of the background. I am very close to being done with this. I am still leaning towards "Jello Shot" for this one. Let me know if you have any better ideas.

Where the sun is fierce...

I am back in Mississippi. My last week at MacDowell was pretty amazing. I had an open studio which was attended by all the "cool people." An old old friend visited and the weather was amazing (finally). I am almost finished with the giant painting (title TBA). I have some work to do on the background. Now, I am enjoying all the amenities of modern life!
