Report from Greensboro, NC

Drawings from the workshop with the 7th and 8th graders
I visited Greensboro, NC this week for the SECAC conference. In addition, I had a solo show called "Produce" (which is still up until Christmas) at Canterbury School. Also,  I did an artist lecture and workshop with students. I was so impressed with the students' drawings. They did large scale drawings of fruits and vegetables on colored paper.
The Gallery at Canterbury is a beautiful space! I had a great time. Thank you!

Vine Sketchbooks for Drawing 2 class

Instead of doing an actual sketchbook, I had my students do drawings on Vine. Here are some of my favorites. You can see all of them using the #art211 tag.

Studio Update

Here are some new work coming out of the art closet!

 Jello on Mylar, 19" x 24"
detail

This drawing (9" x 12" on yupo) was the inspiration for the larger piece below. I was influenced by a vintage Jell-O promotional booklet.
Here is the larger piece (24" x 36")
Here is a little sneak peak of the sides.

Twist It Terri, 7" x 9" mixed media collage

Penland highlights

Kevin and I headed up the mountain for the Benefit Auction. They raised over $600,000 in two days! I loved seeing all of the pieces but the live auction is the best part. It is quite a spectacle. Here are some things that I liked.

 Critz Campell- wood veneer piece
Kevin Waddell's super fancy Z tables. I have the first ones.
Mark Peiser, glass piece
 Jeanine Marchand, ceramic piece

Arkansas y'all!

Today we visited the Crystal Bridges museum in Bentonville Arkansas. The museum has spectacular grounds. I love the Roxy Paine tree!

I was especially impressed by this James Turrell piece. My next visit will include a viewing during sunrise and sunset.
I really like the more modern pieces in the permanent collection... Here are some of the highlights....

 Hans Hoffmann
 Miriam Shapiro
Nick Cave

Another revelation was the 21 c hotel. It is museum/boutique hotel. It was amazing- the juxtaposition between small town southern square and high end contemporary art was jarring. However, I loved the playfulness of the collection and the warm staff. After visiting Chelsea so often, it was different to be welcomed into the space.
This piece is in the hotel gym... motivational?

Tiny moma

Just a quick trip to moma... Here are some of the highlights.

Wolfgang laib pollen- it was beautiful and so hard to capture. This work is so great in real life.

Art lesson in front of starry night.

Suzanne Duchamp! Who knew!!?! I had no idea that marcel had a sister who was also an artist. This was part of the Inventing Abstraction show.

Sophie Tauber Arp- modernist needlepoint in the Inventing Abstraction show.

In the Tokyo avant garde show- I really liked this piece by sekine nobuo. I love those neon frames! Sorry for the crappy photo- I totally sneaked it.
